“Officers noticed a suspicious looking vehicle travelling on a gravel road and upon seeing the Police car, the vehicle did a u-turn and sped off trying to evade Police,” said a police spokesperson. “The vehicle was searched and Police located the cash, alongside empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways,” they added. The men were arrested and will appear in court at a later date. Further charges may follow, leading to imprisonment for six months or a fine of up to $4,000.

The reason that the men were trying to smuggle in KFC food is that New Zealand is currently in lockdown due to the outbreak of cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Most of the outbreaks have been in Auckland, where restaurants are also shut and only essential services are allowed to operate.
